‘Scoop’ stretcher for Motorplex

11 Feb, 2010 02:06 PM

A new more modern scoop stretcher has been bought for the Collie Motorplex ambulance with a $1200 grant from the Verve Energy Collie Community Fund.

The scoop stretcher transfers patients from an accident site to the ambulance by scooping up the patient in the position he/she is found. This reduces the risk of further injury.

The grant enabled the Motorplex to replace the old metal and plastic frame previously used to transport patients.

Motorplex manager Simon Sterner said he applied for the grant following a motorbike accident at the Motorplex.

Eight people were needed to carry a person with a suspected neck injury to the ambulance.

There were pieces missing from the old stretcher so we had to cast it aside and ask other motorbike riders to carry the injured rider to make the move as smooth as possible,” Mr Sterner said.

Although the Motorplex ambulance has been used only for Motorplex incidents, it is road registered and can be used for any local community emergency.

Mr Sterner said the Motorplex stretcher was used on average about 20 times every two months.

• The Verve Energy Collie Community Fund’s 2010 grant round has opened to local community and interest groups needing support today. Groups can apply for funding until Friday, April, 23.

A local initiative, Verve Energy Collie Community Fund was set up by Verve Energy in 2008 to directly benefit local people and projects.

The Verve Energy Collie Community Fund is one of many regional funds established under the trusteeship of the WA Community Foundation. The foundation is an independent organisation set up to strengthen communities by promoting philanthropic community-business partnerships.

Verve Energy’s Muja Power Station manager Hans Dopheide said many small community groups needed a financial boost but their projects usually flew under the radar of corporate support because of their size.

“The Collie Senior Citizens Meal on Wheels is a perfect example,” said Mr Dopheide.

“This community group was one of seven that were awarded a $1000 grant last year through the fund and they bought several new dining tables as their old ones were falling apart.”

The Verve Energy Colllie Community Fund focused on grass roots projects that despite being small, often affected the community in a meaningful way, he said.

Consideration will be given to a broad range of projects; as long as they are of a general charitable or benevolent purpose and support one or more of the following areas:

• environmental initiatives or activities;

• youth education, training or mentoring;

• innovative projects that benefit the local community; and

• arts, cultural and other events or activities that benefit the local community.

Grant applications of up to $1000 are invited for consideration. Projects requiring funding should start or occur in 2010.

Applicants must complete the application form and address the grant guidelines, which are available from www.wacf.org.au/Verve Energy Collie Community Fund.asp, or by contacting the foundation on 9224 6060 or via email on info@wacf.org.au.Applications close 5pm Friday, April 23.
